SLA - Stereolithography

SLA is the technology that provides the best dimensional accuracy, surface finish and the shortest lead time.

One of the main advantages of SLA is the dimensional accuracy of the components. The surface finish is also very good, making this technology suitable for visual models and components where the function has to be tested. Components are normally shipped within a few days, but sometimes they can be delivered within a few hours. The production time depends on the complexity and size of the component(s).

There are many kinds of SLA materials, each with their own unique properties. The base is an epoxy, which makes the material sensitive to moisture to varying degrees. The material that is chosen is based on the material properties that are required.

addema offers two kinds of materials, VisiJet® Tough and VisiJet® Clear. VisiJet® Tough is a grey PP/ABS-like material that is extremely durable. VisiJet® Clear is a transparent PC-like material with a relatively high E module.

addema can build components measuring up to 380x380x250 mm in one section, while larger components are joined together with glue.

Technical description

The technique of 3D printers makes it is easy to transform a datamodel to a physical object. In contrast to conventional CNC milling e.g , where material is removed, 3D printers build the part by adding materials.

The start of additive manufacturing is a CAD file, such as IGS or STEP.  The CAD-file is converted to the file format STL and by using a software the model is slized up in layers of 0.05 to 0.125 mm. The layers are transferred to the machine that starts to print one layer at a time. When a layer is build material is added and the next layer will be printed. This is repeated until the models are done.

SLA is based on a liquid epoxy, which is cured when illuminated with laser. During the process, the part is held in place by a supportstructure. The support resembles a lattice of piles which penetrate the part. This gives rise to small bumps on the part that may need to be grinded.

After the machine process is done the parts are covered in uncured liquid which needs to be washed away. Post processing as blasting, painting etc. is possible.
